What you should know about mice in Glasgow.
There are 2 species of mice commonly found in Glasgow. One is field mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) and the other is house mice (mus musculus).
We tend to find more field mice in the suburbs of Glasgow and house mice in more central urban areas.
Tenement flats are the worst affected building type when it comes to mouse problems in Glasgow.
Due to their age and often the presence of food businesses at the bottom they are extremely convenient places for mice to set up home.
Interestingly the worst affected flats tend to be at the top of the building -and not at the bottom like most people would assume- in my experience.
A mouse can squeeze through a hole the size of a 5p coin. They can accomplish this using aspects of their anatomy that makes it easy for them to exploit small holes. One reason is that they are very small (about 3-10cm on average).
Another Is that they their bones are positioned differently making it easier for them to pass through small gaps.
The fact that mice can exploit holes of such small sizes means that they are very hard to stop when they make up their mind to enter a property.
What are the signs to look out for?
he most obvious thing is of course an actual mouse being seen in your home or business. Bear in mind mice are very small creatures and even a baby rat is larger than an adult mouse so you should hopefully be able to tell to some level whether what you’ve seen is a rat or a mouse
The other major tell-tale sign when it comes to looking for mice in your home is to look for droppings.
Mice are incontinent which means that wherever they go they defecate.
This means that they tend to leave a trail of droppings in most places they go. The droppings are usually the size of a grain of rice and jet black in colour. If you are wearing gloves and you pick up these droppings you will notice that they are usually very hard.
The best place to check for droppings is behind your kitchen kickboards -if you are able to take them off safely- and in the cupboard beneath your kitchen sink although you can in theory find them anywhere.
In heavier infestations you may also come across smear marks at locations that they have come and gone from repeatedly. Also food or fixtures in the home being gnawed at the edges is a strong sign you have mice in the home.
DIY pest control rarely works against house mice in Glasgow
Field mice (if the problem is a small one) can be relatively straightforward to fix on a DIY basis but house mice issues tend to be more difficult to resolve.
One of the biggest reasons for this is that some mice have become behaviourally resistant to eating standard poison formulations and going near normal mouse traps.
The southside and west end of Glasgow are famous areas for mice which are very hard to kill or eradicate completely.
The key to getting eradication is a riddance program combined with a proofing program.
Basically we still need to use a combination of traps and poison to kill mice but we also need to identify how they’re getting in and how best to seal the property against their entry.
We use advanced poison formulations that are both safe and effective. Our poisons are far stronger than what you can buy in the shop and designed to be more palatable or attractive to mice than standard baits.
We also have several other methods for mouse pest control near me involving techniques and materials that are specific to professional pest controllers only which we can use where and when we see fit.
As part of any mice control program that we do we will do our utmost to identify all the entry points in the house and show them to you. We can also block many of the entry points ourselves – depending on the nature of the repair.
What we cannot repair ourselves we will let you know what the repair is and what is the best way to fix it. You can then get a handyman or joiner to do the repair or if you are so inclined do it yourself.
This combined approach of riddance and prevention is hands down the best method of getting rid of mice in the long term.
We do not guarantee eradication in blocks of flats or where one property is attached to the other but do have a very high success rate as evidenced by our positive reviews. We try and be as honest as we can with our customers and will always advise prior to enacting works of the practicality of long term eradication. This is why unlike other companies which dodge the question i am mentioning it here.
As a bonus we are also a lot cheaper than larger companies and by giving us the work you will be supporting a local business employing good technicians who care about the jobs to do.

Some more information about mice in Glasgow.
How fast do mice breed?
A female mouse from conception to birth needs only three weeks to give birth to a litter of 5 to 10 mice.
The baby mice take about three weeks to become fully weaned which means that they no longer need their mothers milk and can travel around and look for food on the own.
The young mice will become sexually mature in about two months. Most house mice tend to survive 1-2 years indoors if untreated.
A female mouse can have up to 10 litters a year so you can be looking at around 60 mice from just one female if nothing is done.
What do they eat?
Mice are omnivorous and basically eat anything they can get a hold off.
How much do they eat?
They are sporadic feeders and eat 3-5 grams a day from different sources.
Where do they live?
Mice are commonly referred to as commensual rodents “co mensa” is a Latin phrase which basically means “to live off mans table”.
What I mean is that is a creature that wants to live close to human beings but not directly in their line of sight. It is uncommon to find mice living in actual kitchen cabinets or in the actual living space of the house where you are. They tend to live in cavity walls, roof voids or subfloor voids and often in places that are not accessible to human beings but are still in close proximity to them.
Is it true you can’t get rats and mice at the same time?
It is unusual to have rats and mice at the same time as rats or known to predate mice. However it is not unheard of and I have come across situations were rats and mice are affecting the same property.
Will having a cat help?
I have no easy answer for this question. One reason for this is that I have attended many homes and properties to treat mice infestations where there is a pet cat in the house already. Another reason is that I do feel that cats have some form of deterrent effect on mice but I am doubtful whether that’s sufficient to control mice on it’s own.
Do ultrasonic pest repellers work on mice?
No no and no. Don’t buy them. They are a complete waste of money and quite often very expensive.
I was once treating a warehouse with a severe rodent infestation. They had ultrasonic devices plugged in everywhere. After we had finished resolving the mouse problem using our standard process the owner of the business asked me about these ultrasonic devices that they had plugged in everywhere (that they happened to sell online as well). I asked them how successful did he think they were before he called us and he said they hadn’t made a difference at all. I asked them -in light of this recent revelation regarding the product that they were selling- would they now stop selling it?
The owner laughed and said “we sell thousands of these”. Which was basically another way of saying no way were they going to stop selling this product to the unsuspecting public.
How long do mice live?
About 1-2 years in the wild.
Can mice bite?
Yes but it is very rare for them to do so.
Do you get disease from mice?
Mice can carry disease. This is one reason to eliminate them as soon as possible from your home. They do this primarily by urinating on surfaces or walking through unsanitary surfaces before walking on clean ones spreading pathogens as they go.
How much does Mouse Pest Control cost?
I can’t give you a price online as I don’t know where you live, what kind of property it is or how severe your problem is. They only way for me to give you an accurate quote is to speak to you to give you a realistic estimate. Fixed price companies will invariably under or over quote. Neither of which is advisable.
