What you should know about mice in Glasgow.

There are 2 species of mice commonly found in Glasgow. One is field mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) and the other is house mice (mus musculus).

We tend to find more field mice in the suburbs of Glasgow and house mice in more central urban areas.

Tenement flats are the worst affected building type when it comes to mouse problems in Glasgow.

Due to their age and often the presence of food businesses at the bottom they are extremely convenient places for mice to set up home.

Interestingly the worst affected flats tend to be at the top of the building -and not at the bottom like most people would assume- in my experience.

A mouse can squeeze through a hole the size of a 5p coin. They can accomplish this using aspects of their anatomy that makes it easy for them to exploit small holes. One reason is that they are very small (about 3-10cm on average).

Another Is that they their bones are positioned differently making it easier for them to pass through small gaps.

The fact that mice can exploit holes of such small sizes means that they are very hard to stop when they make up their mind to enter a property.

What are the signs to look out for?

he most obvious thing is of course an actual mouse being seen in your home or business. Bear in mind mice are very small creatures and even a baby rat is larger than an adult mouse so you should hopefully be able to tell to some level whether what you’ve seen is a rat or a mouse

The other major tell-tale sign when it comes to looking for mice in your home is to look for droppings.

Mice are incontinent which means that wherever they go they defecate.

This means that they tend to leave a trail of droppings in most places they go. The droppings are usually the size of a grain of rice and jet black in colour. If you are wearing gloves and you pick up these droppings you will notice that they are usually very hard.

The best place to check for droppings is behind your kitchen kickboards -if you are able to take them off safely- and in the cupboard beneath your kitchen sink although you can in theory find them anywhere.

In heavier infestations you may also come across smear marks at locations that they have come and gone from repeatedly. Also food or fixtures in the home being gnawed at the edges is a strong sign you have mice in the home.

DIY pest control rarely works against house mice in Glasgow

Field mice (if the problem is a small one) can be relatively straightforward to fix on a DIY basis but house mice issues tend to be more difficult to resolve.

One of the biggest reasons for this is that some mice have become behaviourally resistant to eating standard poison formulations and going near normal mouse traps.

The southside and west end of Glasgow are famous areas for mice which are very hard to kill or eradicate completely.

The key to getting eradication is a riddance program combined with a proofing program.

Basically we still need to use a combination of traps and poison to kill mice but we also need to identify how they’re getting in and how best to seal the property against their entry.

We use advanced poison formulations that are both safe and effective. Our poisons are far stronger than what you can buy in the shop and designed to be more palatable or attractive to mice than standard baits.

We also have several other methods for mouse pest control near me involving techniques and materials that are specific to professional pest controllers only which we can use where and when we see fit.

As part of any mice control program that we do we will do our utmost to identify all the entry points in the house and show them to you. We can also block many of the entry points ourselves – depending on the nature of the repair.

What we cannot repair ourselves we will let you know what the repair is and what is the best way to fix it. You can then get a handyman or joiner to do the repair or if you are so inclined do it yourself.

This combined approach of riddance and prevention is hands down the best method of getting rid of mice in the long term.

We do not guarantee eradication in blocks of flats or where one property is attached to the other but do have a very high success rate as evidenced by our positive reviews. We try and be as honest as we can with our customers and will always advise prior to enacting works of the practicality of long term eradication. This is why unlike other companies which dodge the question i am mentioning it here.

As a bonus we are also a lot cheaper than larger companies and by giving us the work you will be supporting a local business employing good technicians who care about the jobs to do.
