Ant Control Glasgow
Ants are a common sight in many homes and businesses throughout Glasgow especially -but not exclusively -in the summer.
The main species of Ants people come across in the home is -Lasius Niger or black garden ants.
These ants can often surprise many homeowners by their sheer numbers present, hunting for food, and their propensity to attack poorly protected foodstuffs in kitchens leading to food having to be thrown away.
An ant colony starts with a single fertilised queen -who has survived the previous winter- who lays her first batch of eggs usually in soft soil. These eggs hatch into larvae (babies which look like maggots) which the queen feeds until they pupate (their skin goes hard) and out pops a worker ant. Once the first batch of worker ants are made then the queen leaves the feeding of the next batch of larvae to the worker ants. These ants do everything from cleaning the nest to finding new food sources to defending the nest. The queen continues to lay eggs.
Near the end of the nest lifecycle the queen produces a batch of male ants (all worker ants are sterile females) and a new batch of queens. This final batch can fly and are responsible for the “swarm” of ants you tend to get in summer as they mate on the wing (while flying) and the males die off leaving new fertilised queens.
These new queens disperse and hibernate ready to start of the whole cycle next year.
You do get exotic ants which have more than one queen (like pharaohs ants). These can be a bit more difficult and tricky to kill.

Ants FAQ
What’s the difference between DIY treatment and professional treatment?
DIY treatment is a valid treatment option if you feel you have a low level problem which you feel comfortable dealing with yourselves. Most people call us when they simply don’t feel comfortable dealing with the infestation themselves or have tried to deal with it themselves and are not succeeding.
For diy treatment powders, sprays and bait stations are all popular items sold in many hardware shops. The only advise I would give you regarding these products is to always read and follow the manufacturer label instructions before using the product.
Our treatments use professional use only insecticide treatments not available to the general public which are backed up by knowledgeable and experienced technicians. This means our success rate in eradicating problems is that much higher and you can have more certainty the treatment will work which is usually a key thing influencing someone’s decision to call us.
How do we treat ants nests?
We have several different methods of treating ants. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.
One thing I can say for certain is that any method we use is a tried and tested one that has been used before.
Is the treatment we do safe for people, children and pets?
All the treatments we do are designed with safety in mind and to-date out of thousands of treatments we have never had any safety issues. I will always endeavour to explain the way any treatment works in detail prior to enacting it.
What’s the difference in treatment quality between using us and a national well known company?
Honestly. There is very little difference in the quality of the treatment except that a larger firm will usually charge several times what we charge for virtually the same treatment. Guarantees given with these treatments are usually pointless because you have in effect paid many times what the actual cost of the treatment is in advance.
How long does treatment for ants takes?
In the overwhelming majority of cases one treatment -which can take a maximum of 1-2 hours -is enough. Say 90%-95% of cases.
In other treatments when the ant infestation is in the actual fabric of the building or their are multiple ant colonies nearby or if their are exotic species of ants present then multiple treatments can be required.
Are ants dangerous in any way?
Ants that bite are common in many parts of the world. Thankfully their are no known cases of biting ants in the UK least of all Glasgow.
One thing to keep in mind is that although they are not dangerous in the traditional sense they are known to be able to spread disease through contamination as they can walk over unsanitary areas like your bin to reach your kitchen worktop (for example) where they can transmit disease causing bacteria.
What can if do if I have ants in my home?
Well firstly you can look carefully to see if you can find the path the ants are taking and follow it back to the nest. Knowing where the nest is makes treatment a lot more straightforward. Also because ants are usually attracted to sweet things do your best to remove any sticky residue or food debris anywhere in the home such as worktops, tables and the floor. Finally protect all your food by storing it as best as possible in sealed containers.
Hope that helps!
